PhD positions

Imperial PhD scholarships

I (Dr Ben Moseley) am currently advertising several PhD topics which are eligible for Imperial PhD scholarship funding (starting September 2027):

Scalable physics-informed neural networks for large-scale simulation [Info sheet]

Automatic design of PDE solvers with neural-guided search [Info sheet]

Learning dynamics on manifolds with neural geodesic flows [Info sheet]

I am also happy to consider other topic proposals – in this case please send me a research proposal (see Apply).

Deadlines

Most scholarship application deadlines are early January: see here for exact dates.

See here for more details on Imperial PhD scholarships.

Other PhD funding sources

In general, I am open to supervising PhD projects on scientific machine learning topics if an appropriate funding source can be found, for example through industry funding. If you’re interested in this route, please send me a research proposal outlining your proposed PhD topic (see Apply).

Apply

To apply, please start by emailing me, attaching the following:

  • CV (including education, and any research experience).
  • Brief motivation letter (200 – 400 words) where you should highlight how your experience enables you to pursue the project, and your own vision for the project (can be in the email body).
  • Research proposal (only if you are not applying for a pre-defined project; 2-3 pages). Effective research proposals are focused and concise; they should demonstrate a solid understanding of a (SciML) field, identify a specific, impactful problem or research question, and outline a feasible methodology. I encourage you to review our lab’s research to understand how your work might align with our focus. See here for more tips.
  • Any additional materials that support your application (optional).

I reserve the right to disregard applications that do not adhere to these instructions or appear overly generic. Please note it may take me up to 2 weeks to review your application. I do my best to respond to everyone, although this is not always possible given the volume of applications. If I think there may be a good fit, I will be in touch by email to discuss next steps.

After you apply

Applications that pass an initial screening will be followed by a 1:1 interview, where we will discuss your research interests and background. I will also ask you to prepare a short 10 min research talk, and complete a SciML-related coding task (which does not need preparation beforehand).

Should there be mutual interest following the initial interview, you will be encouraged to formally apply. At this stage, you will need to provide a research proposal and two academic referees. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a departmental/scholarship interview, which will include at least one additional faculty member. For more details on the formal PhD application process at Imperial see here.

Postdoc positions

I am open to mentoring Imperial I-X AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowships – please see the link for more details.

We do not currently have any other open postdoc positions – new positions will be posted here whenever they become available.

Master’s projects

I am open to supervising both home and visiting Master’s students provided our interests align.

Imperial students

Please start by sending me your CV along with a short description of your relevant experience and research interests.

Visiting students

Please start by sending me your CV and a 1-page project proposal highlighting a research question, its related literature, and the methods you are interested in developing.

We do not currently have funding to cover visits, so you (or your home institution) will need to cover the cost, please read the Imperial guidance here.

Visiting PhD students

I am open to hosting visiting PhD students provided our interests align. Please start by emailing me with your CV and a short proposal on the research you would like to carry out during your visit.

We do not currently have funding to cover visits, so you (or your home institution) will need to cover the cost, please read the Imperial guidance here.
